Decentralized prediction market Polymarket announced on Wednesday the launch of its mobile application in the United States. Under the formal supervision of federal regulators, the app will allow users to engage in prediction trading on sports event outcomes using real funds.
Against all odds.

This launch marks a significant return for Polymarket to the U.S. market. The platform was previously barred from operating in the United States in 2022 after the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) identified its offerings as “unregistered event-based derivatives.”
The earlier regulatory conflict culminated in Polymarket paying a $1.4 million fine and being compelled to substantially reconfigure its business model to comply with stringent U.S. financial regulations.
Now, with formal CFTC approval, Polymarket has transformed into a federally regulated “intermediary exchange.” This new operational model positions it more closely with traditional derivatives trading platforms. The company emphasizes that Polymarket is not a “gambling platform” but rather a sophisticated venue for the public to trade on the outcomes of real-world events.
Polymarket’s iOS app for the U.S. is already live and is being progressively rolled out to users on its official waitlist. Initially, the platform will focus on sports prediction markets, covering major events and tournaments.
Polymarket’s re-entry coincides with a burgeoning interest in prediction markets across the United States. Proponents argue that these markets possess a unique ability to harness collective intelligence, effectively capturing public expectations and sentiment in highly uncertain scenarios. Whether it’s elections, policy decisions, or economic events, prediction markets are believed to unearth valuable “market signals” that offer deeper insights than traditional polls or analyst commentary.
