Fidelity’s Ethereum ETF to Introduce Staking and Quarterly Cash Dividends, Igniting Competition
In a strategic move to meet robust investor demand for stable yields, asset management giant Fidelity is set to integrate a “staking” mechanism into its nearly $900 million spot Ethereum ETF. This enhancement will be complemented by the introduction of quarterly cash dividends, a development poised to intensify competition within the burgeoning cryptocurrency investment landscape.
According to a recently filed amendment to its registration statement, the “Fidelity Ethereum Fund” (ticker: FETH), which currently boasts a net asset value of $898 million, will have the capability to stake up to 100% of its Ethereum holdings under normal market conditions. While Fidelity has not stipulated a minimum staking ratio, it will strategically retain a portion of unstaked Ethereum. This reserve is crucial for managing investor redemptions, covering fund operational expenses, and ensuring adequate liquidity.
Regulatory Tailwinds Propel Staking Integration
This significant shift by a major Wall Street player is largely facilitated by the “Safe Harbor” tax guidance issued by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in November 2025. This landmark ruling permits eligible cryptocurrency trusts to engage in asset staking without forfeiting their beneficial “Grantor-Trust” tax treatment, a structure designed to prevent double taxation.
Fidelity’s decision aligns it with early movers like Grayscale and 21Shares, who have already added direct staking functionality to their Ethereum ETFs. In contrast, industry rival BlackRock is pursuing a different strategy, opting to launch a separate, dedicated Ethereum staking ETF rather than integrating it into an existing fund.
Rewarding Investors: Staking Rewards and Dividend Distribution
For investors keenly interested in income distribution, Fidelity’s plan outlines a clear allocation of staking rewards. The fund intends to retain 85% of the rewards, with the remaining 15% dedicated to compensating the fund issuer, custodian, and critical node operators. Noteworthy industry players such as Blockdaemon, Figment, and Galaxy are currently listed as the fund’s node operator partners, underscoring the institutional backing for this initiative.
The net income generated from staking will first be utilized to offset the fund’s daily operational expenses. Any surplus will then be converted into quarterly cash dividends for investors. In compliance with IRS regulations, these funds are mandated to distribute staking income at least once per quarter. Fidelity further clarified in its documentation that, when necessary, the fund may sell a portion of its Ethereum holdings to secure the cash required for these dividend payouts.
