Norway’s Sovereign Wealth Fund Emerges as a Stealth Bitcoin & Ethereum Giant
The world’s largest sovereign wealth fund, Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global (managed by Norges Bank Investment Management, NBIM), has quietly become an “invisible whale” in the burgeoning cryptocurrency market. Recent in-depth analysis by crypto research firm K33 reveals that as of the first half of 2026, NBIM’s indirect Bitcoin exposure, primarily through strategic investments in “hodler stocks,” has surged to an unprecedented all-time high of 11,549 BTC, valued at approximately $725 million.
Record Bitcoin Holdings: A Surge in Indirect Exposure
K33’s comprehensive report highlights a substantial 21.2% increase in NBIM’s indirect Bitcoin holdings during the first half of this year alone. Extending this view to the past year, the growth skyrockets to an impressive 60.5%, culminating in the fund’s current total of 11,549 BTC. This remarkable expansion is largely attributed to the fund’s significant investments in publicly listed companies that hold substantial amounts of Bitcoin on their balance sheets. Key among these are prominent digital asset proponents such as MicroStrategy, Metaplanet, MARA, Coinbase, Block, and even electric vehicle giant Tesla.
Vetle Lunde, Head of Research at K33, underscored the significance of this milestone on social media, exclaiming: “As of the end of H1 2026, NBIM’s indirect BTC exposure has reached a new all-time high, entering five-digit territory with 11,549 BTC held. This marks the sixth consecutive period in which the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund has seen its indirect BTC exposure grow.”

A Global Powerhouse’s Unintentional Crypto Footprint
Norges Bank, acting on behalf of the Ministry of Finance, entrusts NBIM with the stewardship of the Government Pension Fund. With an astounding $2.4 trillion in assets under management (AUM), as revealed in the latest data this week, the fund’s capital is broadly diversified across global equities, fixed income, and real estate markets, making it a truly global investment powerhouse.
While the indirect Bitcoin holding is substantial, Vetle Lunde notes that it currently represents a mere 0.03% of NBIM’s total AUM, a slight dip from 0.04% at the close of 2025. He provides crucial context on the nature of this exposure:
“We must recognize that this exposure is, in all likelihood, not a deliberate investment strategy by the fund, but rather a natural outcome of its extremely diversified global investment portfolio. Nevertheless, it stands as one of the clearest examples of Bitcoin’s powerful penetration into traditional mainstream finance.”
Since 2022, a period marked by a growing number of corporations integrating Bitcoin into their balance sheets, NBIM’s indirect crypto holdings have steadily climbed. A significant driver of this trend has been the fund’s investment in MicroStrategy, a company renowned for its aggressive strategy of accumulating Bitcoin, often through debt financing.
MicroStrategy Dominance and Other Key Holdings
The data unequivocally indicates that NBIM’s indirect Bitcoin exposure is heavily concentrated in MicroStrategy. The business intelligence firm alone accounts for a staggering 86% of the fund’s total indirect BTC position, equating to approximately 9,914 Bitcoins. As of June 30, NBIM held roughly 1.17% of MicroStrategy’s shares, with a market value of $357.3 million.
Beyond MicroStrategy, other “Bitcoin concept stocks” contribute to NBIM’s indirect digital asset holdings in varying proportions:
- Japanese listed company Metaplanet: 671 BTC (5.8%)
- Bitcoin miner MARA: 421 BTC (3.6%)
- Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase: 183 BTC (1.6%)
- Payments giant Block: 120 BTC (1%)
- Electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla: 97 BTC (0.8%)
Expanding Horizons: NBIM’s First Foray into Ethereum
Historically, NBIM’s indirect cryptocurrency exposure was almost exclusively limited to Bitcoin. However, the latest disclosures reveal a significant new development: the fund has quietly established a position in Bitmine, an Ethereum reserve company chaired by renowned Wall Street analyst Tom Lee. This strategic move marks NBIM’s first indirect exposure to Ethereum (ETH), signaling a potential broadening of its digital asset footprint.
As of the end of June, NBIM held a substantial 6.15 million shares of Bitmine, representing a 1.16% stake valued at approximately $88.3 million. Given Bitmine’s current reserves of 5.805 million Ethereum, this investment effectively grants the Norwegian sovereign wealth fund indirect ownership of approximately 67,340 ETH, valued at an estimated $126 million. This new position solidifies NBIM’s quiet, yet growing, presence in the broader digital asset ecosystem.
