Grayscale, the world’s preeminent digital asset management firm, continues to forge ahead in expanding its cryptocurrency Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) offerings. In a significant move, the company officially submitted registration documents for a “Grayscale Worldcoin ETF” to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Monday.

Should it receive regulatory approval, this groundbreaking initiative would establish the first spot ETF in the United States to directly track Worldcoin’s (recently rebranded as World) native token, WLD. This development signifies a notable step forward for the crypto project, co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, bringing it closer to mainstream financial markets on Wall Street.

Understanding the Proposed ETF Structure

According to the detailed application, the proposed ETF is designed as a passive investment vehicle, holding WLD directly. Outlining the fund’s operational philosophy, Grayscale stated, “As a passive investment vehicle, the investment objective of this trust is to ensure that the net asset value per share accurately reflects the value of the WLD held by the trust.”

Grayscale further elaborated that the ETF’s pricing mechanism would track a designated index price, adjusted to account for the fund’s operational expenses and liabilities.

Robust Financial Infrastructure and Nasdaq Listing

Upon successful approval, the Grayscale Worldcoin ETF is slated for listing and trading on the Nasdaq exchange, adhering to conventional listing standards. To ensure robust financial infrastructure, Grayscale has strategically partnered with established industry leaders:

  • Transfer Agent: Veteran financial giant BNY Mellon.
  • Custodian: BitGo Bank & Trust, responsible for safeguarding the fund’s assets.

Worldcoin (WLD): Bridging AI and Blockchain

For investors keenly observing the convergence of artificial intelligence and blockchain technology, World (WLD) is a familiar and intriguing entity. Co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, the project’s ambitious core vision is to seamlessly integrate biometrics, cryptography, and blockchain to create a global identity solution. Its innovative mechanism leverages an iris-scanning device, dubbed the “Orb,” to verify human identity, subsequently issuing decentralized “digital passports” (World ID) to users worldwide. This system aims to provide a robust method for distinguishing humans from AI in the increasingly digital age.

Currently, WLD commands a market capitalization of approximately $1.3 billion, positioning it as the 55th largest cryptocurrency globally, according to CoinGecko market data.

Grayscale’s Pioneering Track Record in Crypto ETFs

The application for a WLD ETF underscores Grayscale’s ongoing strategic expansion within the cryptocurrency investment landscape. This move follows a series of pioneering efforts by the firm. Notably, Grayscale achieved a historic legal victory against the SEC, successfully converting its flagship Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) into a spot ETF. Subsequently, the firm also launched an Ethereum spot ETF and has actively pursued approval for a diverse array of other cryptocurrency ETFs, including products tracking Dogecoin (DOGE), Solana (SOL), and Chainlink.
