Telegram Launches ‘Humanity’s Largest’ Non-Custodial Wallet, Redefining Web3

Telegram Set to Unveil “Humanity’s Largest” Non-Custodial Crypto Wallet, Redefining Web3 Access

Communication giant Telegram, boasting nearly a billion users worldwide, is poised to make a monumental leap into the Web3 ecosystem. Founder and CEO Pavel Durov announced on Tuesday that the platform plans to officially roll out a non-custodial cryptocurrency wallet to its entire user base this summer.

A Global Push for Crypto Adoption

Durov, sharing the news on his own Telegram channel, declared this strategic move as “humanity’s largest non-custodial wallet promotion campaign.” This initiative aims to drastically lower the barrier to entry for mainstream users into the world of digital assets, empowering individuals with full control over their private keys and funds, independent of third-party custodians.

This ambitious push has been brewing for some time. Just last month, Durov revealed the renaming of Toncoin, the native token of The Open Network (TON) blockchain, to “GRAM.” Further solidifying its commitment to the crypto space, Telegram has also taken on a central role in the TON ecosystem, directly replacing the TON Foundation as its primary manager and largest validator node.

Instant, Zero-Fee Transactions on the Horizon

While specific details remained scarce in Durov’s Tuesday post, he teased a highly anticipated feature: the new wallet functionality will enable “instant and zero-fee cryptocurrency transactions.” This promise alone could be a game-changer, addressing two of the most significant friction points in current crypto interactions.

It’s worth noting that Telegram already offers an integrated crypto wallet service simply called “Wallet,” which allows users to store and trade digital assets. Earlier this year, official figures indicated that this service had already garnered over 150 million registered users, showcasing Telegram’s existing footprint in the crypto community.

Telegram: The Ultimate Web3 Gateway?

Given Telegram’s immense global reach and exceptional user engagement among cryptocurrency enthusiasts, both Wall Street and the broader crypto industry have long viewed the messaging platform as a pivotal gateway for bringing the traditional mass market into the Web3 era.

However, Telegram’s journey into blockchain has not been without its challenges. The company first launched the TON project in 2018, only to face a protracted legal battle with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the years that followed. The SEC deemed the GRAM token offering an unregistered securities sale, ultimately forcing Telegram to halt token sales and abandon the project entirely.

Now, after a period of strategic recalibration, Telegram’s powerful re-entry into the crypto arena underscores its unwavering commitment to the digital asset space. By leveraging its vast community base, Telegram is not just re-entering the game; it’s aiming to redefine the global landscape of cryptocurrency payments.
