Zcash Explodes to Multi-Year Highs as Grayscale Pushes for Landmark Spot ETF
Zcash (ZEC) has witnessed an electrifying surge, reaching its highest valuation since 2018, as asset manager Grayscale actively pursues the conversion of its existing Zcash Trust into a spot Exchange Traded Fund (ETF). This monumental rally, which saw ZEC briefly soar to an impressive $885.42 early today, not only outpaced the broader market but also triggered an unprecedented surge in futures trading volume.
While ZEC has since adjusted to $844.24 at the time of writing, its remarkable 7-day gain of 71.4% has propelled its total market capitalization to an astounding $14.28 billion, securing its position as the 11th largest cryptocurrency globally, according to CoinGecko data.
Grayscale’s ETF Vision: A Game-Changer for ZEC?
The primary catalyst behind ZEC’s robust performance is Grayscale’s persistent efforts. Last Friday, the firm filed its fifth amended registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), outlining its intent to transform its Zcash Trust into “The Zcash ETF.” This proposed ETF would come with an annual management fee of 2.5%. Should it receive SEC approval, it would mark the debut of the first U.S. spot cryptocurrency ETF directly tracking ZEC. Even prior to the public disclosure of this bullish development, ZEC had already demonstrated significant momentum, climbing over 30% in a single week, buoyed by a broader market uplift led by Bitcoin.
Navigating the Altcoin ETF Landscape
The cryptocurrency market has seen several altcoin ETFs successfully list, including those for Solana (SOL), Ripple (XRP), Litecoin, Dogecoin, and BNB. However, their ability to attract capital has varied significantly. Data from SoSoValue reveals that over the past week, the XRP ETF and Solana ETF garnered net inflows of just $40 million and $28 million, respectively. These figures pale in comparison to the nearly $2 billion net inflow witnessed by Bitcoin ETFs during the same period. The ultimate success and market penetration of a Zcash ETF will therefore be a critical test, demonstrating its capacity to carve out a distinct niche in a competitive environment.
Derivatives Market Fuels the Rally
Beyond the spot market, the derivatives sector played a profoundly influential role in ZEC’s meteoric rise. Coinglass data indicates that within a 24-hour window during ZEC’s price surge, futures trading volume reached an astonishing $9.5 billion. This figure dramatically overshadowed the spot market’s trading volume, which stood at $1.06 billion. Furthermore, ZEC’s Open Interest (OI) soared to $1.8 billion, representing approximately 13% of its total market capitalization. This significant OI signals a substantial influx of leveraged capital, highlighting intense speculative activity and a dynamic interplay between bullish and bearish positions.
DCG’s Strategic Move and Zcash’s Resilient Comeback
Adding another layer of bullish sentiment, Grayscale’s parent company, Digital Currency Group (DCG), is exploring a strategic move. Earlier amended documents revealed that a DCG subsidiary is considering acquiring up to 200,000 ZEC, valued at approximately $164 million, through the trust fund. While these discussions remain non-binding, they have certainly fueled market speculation and optimism surrounding Zcash’s future trajectory.
The powerful rebound observed since the weekend also signifies Zcash’s definitive recovery from the shadow of a severe crash in June this year. At that time, market panic ensued after the development team disclosed a critical “token forgery” vulnerability within the underlying Orchard Shielded Pool – a core mechanism in the Zcash network designed to encrypt and conceal transaction details. This led to ZEC’s price plummeting over 60%, from $630 to $250. Fortunately, the development team swiftly addressed the issue, successfully patching the vulnerability through the NU6.2 network upgrade.
Looking Ahead: The Road to New Peaks
From its June trough, ZEC’s price has now more than tripled, even surpassing its pre-crash levels by approximately 35%. This remarkable recovery underscores the asset’s resilience and the market’s renewed confidence. However, despite its recent impressive performance, ZEC remains a considerable distance – roughly 75% – from its all-time high of $3,191.93, established in 2016. The path forward for Zcash will be closely watched as it navigates the evolving regulatory landscape and aims to solidify its position in the competitive crypto market.
