Trump Family Crypto Bank: Abu Dhabi Royal’s 49% Stake Sparks Scrutiny

Trump Family Crypto Venture Under Scrutiny Over Abu Dhabi Royal’s Significant Stake

Donald Trump’s family-owned cryptocurrency enterprise, World Liberty Financial (WLFI), is once again at the center of controversy. A recent investigative report by The Wall Street Journal has revealed that Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a key figure in the Abu Dhabi royal family and brother of the UAE President, holds a substantial 49% stake in the holding company through which WLFI plans to apply for a bank license. Sheikh Tahnoon, often dubbed the “spy chief,” is reportedly channeling this investment via offshore entities.

This significant investment has rapidly escalated concerns regarding potential conflicts of interest, especially given Sheikh Tahnoon’s dual roles as the UAE’s National Security Advisor and the head of the nation’s multi-hundred-billion-dollar sovereign wealth funds and investment institutions.

To expand its financial footprint, WLFI previously established a new entity, “World Liberty Trust Company,” through which it applied to the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) for a National Trust Bank Charter. The company received preliminary approval for this charter several weeks ago.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the holding company for this prospective bank is “WLTC Holdings.” Sheikh Tahnoon and his investment partners are said to indirectly control up to 49% of WLTC Holdings via a company named “StringZ Holding RSC.”

Should the bank receive full operational approval, WLFI would be legally empowered to conduct a wide array of financial and cryptocurrency services. These include the issuance and redemption of stablecoins, fiat currency on-ramps and off-ramps, and digital asset custody and conversion services.

Currently, WLFI’s USD1 stablecoin boasts a market capitalization exceeding $4 billion, positioning it as the fourth-largest stablecoin globally, trailing only Tether (USDT) and Circle (USDC).

White House Rejects Conflict of Interest Claims

This is not the first instance of Sheikh Tahnoon injecting capital into a Trump family venture. Earlier this year, The Wall Street Journal reported that Aryam Investment 1, an investment firm backed by Tahnoon, secretly invested $500 million to acquire a 49% stake in WLFI’s parent company just days before Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration.

In response to mounting public scrutiny, White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly issued a statement unequivocally denying any conflict of interest:

“President Trump’s decisions are solely guided by the best interests of the American people. Despite years of relentless smears and false accusations from the fake news media against him and his family’s businesses, American voters overwhelmingly returned him to the White House.”

Despite the White House’s staunch denial, this transaction, involving substantial funds from a Middle Eastern royal family and the business interests of a sitting president, has already triggered significant political repercussions within the U.S. Congress.

Senate Democrats have formally requested that Republican leadership convene hearings on the matter. Concurrently, the House of Representatives is also closely monitoring the situation, with Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna having initiated a special investigation into the flow of UAE royal funds into WLFI as early as February. With the latest evidence brought to light by The Wall Street Journal, congressional oversight and pressure on the Trump family’s overseas business dealings are expected to intensify.
