MANTRA Chain Suffers Major Exploit, Network Halted as $MANTRA Plummets



MANTRA Chain, a blockchain platform dedicated to tokenizing traditional financial assets like funds and bonds, experienced a significant security breach earlier today, August 21st. The incident led to a dramatic 18.5% plunge in its native token, $MANTRA, hitting an all-time low before the network was completely shut down. The entire blockchain ceased block production, impacting all transactions, deposits, withdrawals, and cross-chain functionalities, triggering widespread panic across the crypto market.

The immediate aftermath saw $MANTRA’s value plummet from $0.005060 to a low of $0.004126 in the early hours, according to CoinGecko data. While the token later recovered slightly to approximately $0.0044, it still registered a 10% decline over 24 hours. Concurrently, trading volume for $MANTRA skyrocketed by nearly 600%, reaching around $24 million, indicating intense market activity amidst the crisis. Minutes after the price bottomed out, MANTRA Chain itself went offline. The team swiftly confirmed the anomaly, stating that “preventative measures” were enacted to contain further damage, including the freezing of all on-chain transactions and network endpoints. Major cryptocurrency exchanges followed suit, temporarily suspending deposit and withdrawal services for $MANTRA.

Although official sources have not yet definitively linked the $MANTRA price crash directly to the exploit, such cybersecurity incidents in the crypto space invariably erode investor confidence, leading to market volatility as holders re-evaluate their risk exposure.

External Software Vulnerability Exploited, MANTRA Freezes Transactions

In a subsequent update via their status page, the MANTRA Chain team candidly revealed that the attack exploited a vulnerability within an “upstream dependency” – an external, third-party software component that MANTRA Chain integrates. The team has successfully pinpointed the source of the vulnerability and is now actively preparing a patch to rectify the issue.

Currently, the validators responsible for maintaining MANTRA Chain remain offline. Once the development team finalizes and tests the fix, they will need to coordinate with these validators to ensure security and facilitate a safe network restart. Furthermore, MANTRA Chain is diligently tracking the flow of funds and collaborating with major exchanges to assess the full scope of the impact. However, critical details such as the specific exploited software, the exact attack vector, and whether any assets have been compromised, are yet to be disclosed. “We are still in the process of comprehensively evaluating the overall impact, and a complete picture of the damage is not yet available,” MANTRA Chain stated.

This incident marks another significant test of market confidence for the $MANTRA token. Its predecessor, $OM, faced a severe sell-off in April 2025, experiencing a single-day crash of over 90% and wiping out more than $5 billion in market capitalization. It’s important to note that $MANTRA itself is the result of a token split and rebranding completed in 2026, where the original $OM was split 1-for-4 and renamed $MANTRA, becoming the native staking token for the MANTRA Chain. Adding another layer of complexity, Inveniam Capital Partners, which invested $20 million in MANTRA Chain last year, announced in June its intention to acquire the platform, with the transaction anticipated to close in Q3 of this year.
