Circle Buys 1,000 IBM Blockchain Patents, Now US’s Largest Holder

Circle Dominates Blockchain Patent Landscape with Landmark IBM Acquisition

In a strategic move set to significantly expand its technological advantage, Circle (NYSE: CRCL), the issuer of the USDC stablecoin, has announced the acquisition of nearly 1,000 blockchain patents from tech giant IBM. This landmark deal immediately positions Circle as the largest holder of blockchain patents in the United States.

The extensive portfolio, detailed in an official press release, encompasses over 680 patent families – a series of patent rights for the same core invention across different nations. These patents span critical technological domains including blockchain, banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise-level infrastructure, supply chain verification, and cloud security. This strategic infusion of intellectual property is poised to dramatically bolster Circle’s technical capabilities in on-chain finance and digital payment infrastructure.

While the financial terms of the acquisition remain undisclosed due to confidentiality agreements between the parties, the strategic value of the deal is clear.

IBM, a long-standing titan in technology, has historically been a formidable player in the blockchain patent arena. A December 2025 report by patent analysis firm PatSnap previously identified IBM as holding 790 blockchain patents, placing it among global leaders alongside Ant Group’s Advanced New Technologies and Bank of America.

Circle emphasized that this robust patent collection will form a powerful foundation for its core offerings, including the USDC stablecoin, the Circle Payments Network, its proprietary Arc blockchain, and innovative financial tools designed for AI agents. Furthermore, official documents hint at the potential for future commercial collaborations between Circle and IBM, suggesting a deeper strategic alliance.

“Intellectual property is crucial for advancing our corporate mission and expanding the global adoption of on-chain infrastructure,” stated Sarah Wilson, Circle’s Chief Legal Officer, in a press statement.

This acquisition marks a significant acceleration in Circle’s patent strategy. Historically, the company only secured its first patent – covering “blockchain data parallel processing technology” – in December 2023. Prior to this, Circle proactively joined the non-profit patent protection organization LOT Network to safeguard itself against potential malicious infringement lawsuits from patent assertion entities (PAEs), often referred to as “patent trolls.”

As of now, Circle has not specified how many of these acquired patents were approved in the U.S., nor has it disclosed whether IBM retained any licensing rights for some technologies, or if Circle intends to license out or actively enforce this new portfolio in the future.

The news of this significant patent expansion was met positively by the market, with Circle’s stock experiencing approximately a 2.5% increase in pre-market trading.
