Ethereum’s Fusaka Upgrade: A Pivotal Leap Towards Enhanced Scalability and User Experience
Ethereum has once again reached a pivotal technical milestone, successfully deploying the “Fusaka upgrade” in the early hours of December 4th. This significant network enhancement introduces a suite of technical optimizations aimed at revolutionizing user experience (UX) and dramatically boosting scalability. More profoundly, Fusaka heralds Ethereum’s commitment to rapid, iterative development, officially inaugurating an era of “biannual upgrades.”

Fusaka’s Significance and Scope: A Testament to Rapid Innovation
Fusaka stands as Ethereum’s 17th major upgrade, arriving merely seven months after the Pectra upgrade in May of this year. This rapid cadence underscores the Ethereum Foundation’s formidable execution capabilities, demonstrating its unwavering commitment to aggressive technical iteration, even amidst significant organizational shifts earlier this year.
Remarkably, the Fusaka upgrade encompasses 9 core Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) and 4 auxiliary proposals. Its comprehensive scope even surpasses that of the Pectra upgrade, which included 11 proposals, highlighting the ambition and depth of this latest network enhancement.
PeerDAS: Revolutionizing Data Availability for Layer 2 Scaling
According to the Ethereum Foundation, the foremost innovation within Fusaka is “PeerDAS (Peer Data Availability Sampling).” This represents the most transformative change to data handling since the introduction of “Blobs”—temporary data storage specifically designed for Layer 2 solutions—in 2024.
What exactly is PeerDAS? Previously, validators were burdened with downloading entire data blocks (Blobs) to verify transactions. With PeerDAS, validators can now “sample” random segments of data to verify Rollup data blocks. This ingenious approach drastically reduces bandwidth and storage requirements while significantly increasing data throughput. The direct benefits are substantial: lower transaction fees and enhanced scalability for Layer 2 solutions, all while upholding the robust data availability guarantees of Ethereum’s Layer 1.
Supercharging Blob Capacity and Cost Predictability
In conjunction with PeerDAS, Ethereum is implementing the “Blob Parameter Only (BPO)” update proposal. This will see the target number of Blobs per block increase to 14 (with a maximum limit of 21) by January 7th next year. This strategic move is projected to expand Blob capacity eightfold through the Fusaka upgrade, providing immense relief and potential for Layer 2 networks.
Furthermore, Fusaka addresses a critical issue observed post-Dencun upgrade, where Blob fees could approach zero during periods of low demand. The new upgrade introduces a base fee floor mechanism. This ensures that while Rollup costs become more predictable, proportional additional fees will apply when Layer 2 activity and computational demand surge. This mechanism also fortifies the stability and predictability of Ethereum’s EIP-1559 burning mechanism.
Enhanced User Experience and Protocol Security
Beyond scaling, the Fusaka upgrade delivers several other crucial protocol-level and user experience improvements:
- Increased Gas Limit: This enhancement helps mitigate the risk of single transactions monopolizing network resources, thereby bolstering resilience against Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks.
- Secp256r1 Precompile: Ethereum now natively supports P-256 signatures. This allows wallets to leverage device-level biometrics and hardware keys instead of relying solely on mnemonic phrases, paving the way for a more familiar, secure, and user-friendly login experience on Layer 1, akin to mainstream digital platforms.
The Road Ahead: Glamsterdam and Beyond
As the blockchain ecosystem celebrates the successful deployment of Fusaka, the Ethereum Foundation’s research team is already looking to the future. Planning is well underway for the next major upgrade, codenamed “Glamsterdam,” which is anticipated to launch in 2026, continuing Ethereum’s relentless pursuit of innovation.
